Please join us on Monday , July 27th, 2026 for our Duplicate Cup Competition in memory of our dear friend Andy Hayler and to raise funds for the Royal Marsden, who looked after him with such dedication. If you are unable to play, but would like to make a donation to The Royal Marsden in Andy’s name, here’s the link:
Andrew (Andy) Hayler was a man of many passions.
Many of us knew him through bridge where he was not only a formidable player but also a wonderful partner. Andy brought intelligence, patience and good humour to the table. With a background in mathematics and statistics, he had a naturally analytical mind and loved the challenge of problem-solving, spotting patterns and making sense of complexity. He enjoyed bridge for all of the right reasons: the challenge, the companionship and the endless opportunity to learn.
Bridge was only one part of Andy’s life. He had a lifelong passion for the ancient worlds of Greece and Rome and an encyclopaedic knowledge of their history. This found expression in his work as a coin dealer where he saw coins not just as objects but as tangible links to the past, each with a story to tell. He was respected for his expertise, integrity and enthusiasm.
Above all, Andy loved Jane. Their partnership was the most important in his life. Her recent death left a profound void from which he never recovered.
Throughout his illness, Andy faced every challenge with dignity, humour and grace. Even during countless visits to The Royal Marsden, he never lost his ability to make people smile.
The Royal Marsden cared for him with extraordinary compassion and skill. In his memory, we are raising funds to support its vital work and help ensure other patients and families receive the same exceptional care.
The cost of the duplicate is £10 per person, which should be paid through the Just Giving link. We would be very grateful for any additional donation that you are able to make, however small. Thank you for helping us to honour Andy’s memory and support The Royal Marsden.
